Ruangsilp, Bhawan , 2007. - Dutch East India Company Merchants at the Court of Ayutthaya : Dutch Perceptions of the Thai Kingdom, c.1604-1765. Leiden: Brill, 2007. - 284 pp.: [en] (TANAP Monographs on the History of Asian-European Interaction, Volume 8) ISBN-13: 978-9004156-00-5 No European country enjoyed such long-standing relations with the Thai Kingdom of Ayutthaya as the Netherlands. This study focuses on the perceptions of the merchants of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) of the Thai royal court in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Basing herself on a wealth of Dutch primary sources, the author shows how trade, politics, and diplomacy shaped a unique relationship based on ‘partnership’ and a ‘sense of differences’. The book contributes to expanding the study of the history of Ayutthaya—known for its scarcity of sources— with the help of contemporary Dutch views.

Schrikker, Alicia, 2007. - Dutch and British Colonial Intervention in Sri Lanka, 1780-1815 : Expansion and Reform. Leiden: Brill, 2007. - 272 p.: [en] (TANAP Monographs on the History of Asian-European Interaction, 7) ISBN-13: 978-9004156-02-9 This study examines the colonial intervention in Sri Lanka at the end of the eighteenth century, when British rule replaced Dutch rule on the island. It focuses on the local reforms in the Dutch administration and policymaking on the island prior to the take-over and the various ways in which the British colonial government dealt with the Dutch legacy. Native agency in the colonial state formation process, the influence of the revolutions that swayed Europe at the time and changes in Dutch and British colonial exploitation are addressed respectively in an effort to characterize the transition of colonial regimes in Asia during this revolutionary era.

Shimada, Ryuto, 2006. - The Intra-Asian Trade in Japanese Copper by the Dutch East India Company during the Eighteenth Century. Leiden: Brill, 2006. - 240 p.: [en] (TANAP Monographs on the History of Asian-European Interaction, 4) ISBN-13: 978-9004150-92-8 In this definitive study of the intra-Asian trade in Japanese copper trade by the Dutch East India Company, the author argues that the trade in this commodity reaped high profits. Despite the huge imports of British copper by the English East India Company during the eighteenth century, the Dutch Company successfully continued to sell Japanese copper in South Asia at higher prices. Compared to the capital-intensive development of British mines in the age of the Industrial Revolution, the copper production in Tokugawa Japan was characterized by a labour-intensive 'revolution' which also made a big impact on the local economy.

Viljoen, Russel, 2006. - Jan Paerl, a Khoikhoi in Cape Colonial Society 1761-1851. Leiden: Brill, 2006. - 214 p.: [en] ( TANAP Monographs on the History of Asian-European Interaction, 1) ISBN-13: 978-9004150-93-5 Jan Paerl (1761-1851) was the initiator of what is arguably the first millenarian movement in colonial South Africa. In this biography of the Khoikhoi Jan Paerl light is being shed on this new form of resistance against colonial domination in Cape society. As the prophet, Onsen Liewen Heer, Paerl initiated a quasi-millenarian movement by persuading believers to reassert their Khoikhoi identity and reclaim the “land of their forefathers”. This study discusses Paerl’s post-prophetic activities, his trial and incarceration, the clash with his colonial master, his appropriation of mission Christianity and his last years as a Moravian Christian.
